Cord Roberts (right) and Bernie McDonald with TransCanada Pipelines (left) present a cheque for $6000 to help purchase sports equipment for those who could otherwise not afford it.

Cord, superintendent of the projects group, and his team raised $2000 through a regularly held 50/50 draw. The amount was then matched by TransCanada Pipelines, and matched again by Tyler Pawsey—Major Projects, bringing the grand total to LOTS of equipment for kids who need it!

Strike Group installed a solar gas turbine compressor for TransCanada, which commenced operating on November 1, 2014.

A Team and a Community (October 30, 2014)

A BBQ was recently sponsored by Miller and held at the Crossfield main fabrication shop to recognize the hard work put in by the fabrication team on spool fabrication for the CNRL module project. Not only was the BBQ held in recognition, but also to celebrate the purchase of some new welding machines. You can always find a reason for a good burger!

Carmen Knittig Memorial Golf Tournament (September 13, 2014)

Strike Group is honoured to be a regular sponsor of the annual Carmen Knittig Memorial Golf Tournament in support of Kids Up Front. This worthy charity provides outings to children and their families who would otherwise not have access to live events. They supply tickets to concerts, sports events, and excursions that create exciting experiences and build lasting memories. This year, 84 golfers and 100 dinner attendees helped to raise $10,000 in support of this cause.

Kids Up Front was a meaningful charity for Carmen Knittig, the sister of Strike Group’s own Kenny Knittig. Carmen sadly lost her battle with cancer three years ago.

Strike Group is proud of Kenny for continuing his sister’s memory with this annual event and we will continue to support him and the rest of our team members in their charitable efforts.

RumRunners for Children’s Wish Foundation (June 19, 2014)

Strike Group’s business development team was involved in the PEI RumRunners again this year and raised over $150,000 for the Children’s Wish Foundation of Canada. This foundation remains an important and worthwhile cause for Strike Group, and we are proud to regularly support this special charity.

Troops rally around local subcontractor badly burned in home explosion

For two years this construction crew – now working on the Denning Lake Compressor Station in Northeastern Alberta – has held weekly onsite 50/50 draws to contribute to local community charities.

Their cause became much more personal recently. A local subcontractor who had worked on the compressor station project for two months was badly injured following an explosion and fire at his home.

Daniel Sooley – originally from Newfoundland – was working on a project at home and sustained severe burns covering about 60 per cent of his body, primarily to his arms, legs and torso.

He is currently at the University of Alberta Hospital in the Firefighters Burn Unit, where he faces a long road to recovery.

"He was with us for almost two months and very quickly became part of the Strike Group and TransCanada family," says Mark Bonnell, Project Manager for Strike Group, our primary contractor on the Denning Lake Compressor Station. "After hearing about the tragic accident we all wanted to do something."

The crew - comprised of employees, contractors, and subcontractors - decided to donate the money from several 50-50 draws to help with Daniel's recovery. All of the winners also donated their cash prize to the cause.

They recently sent a check for $4,000 from those draws to Daniel's family to assist with the economic fury that results from a tragedy like this.

Said Mark Pollon, TransCanada Manager, Compression Projects: "I think this is a great story demonstrating how TransCanada and our contractors continue to give back to the communities we work in, while at the same time building a strong sense of family internally even with those who are only onsite a short time."

Additionally, a benefit dance and family auction is being held in Bonnyville, Alberta at the Bonnyville Curling Rink on Friday, May 30 at 8 p.m. Those wishing to help out can contribute at any Royal Bank branch: Transit 01119 Branch: 003 Account: 510-353-6.

The Denning Lake Compressor Station is situated about midway between St. Paul and Bonnyville. The compressor station is a stand-alone project filed under a dedicated National Energy Board (NEB) section 58 application and is intended to transport additional gas supply into the growing northeast Alberta marketplace - as a result of increased Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) oil recovery operations.

It is scheduled to be in service Nov. 1 of this year.

Good Luck Grey Power!

Crossfield Lions Club president Al Kenyon unveiled the town's new bulletin board at the Crossfield Post Office, Oct. 13

The new bulletin board, which replaces the 30-year-old predecessor, was built with funding from the Lions as well as a handful of businesses, and was built by Strike Group.

The board is a part of a large train replica, which was designed by local student Hannah Tiel, a contest winner from W.G.Murdoch High School in Crossfield.

"The contest was last school year, I had no idea what to do for it," Tiel said at the unveiling. "The first thing that popped into my head was trains, because of all the trains you see around here."

"When I got to write my thoughts down on paper, I realized the symbolism of it. It just made sense. It means a lot to me and it means a lot that a lot of people were behind me, and that the community is here right now."

Kenyon said that projects like this show how a community can come together to get things done.

"It's important because when the old one that we had for 30 years was pulled down, we got a lot of inquiries," said Kenyon. "I hope it shows that as a community we have come together."

Crossfield Mayor Nathan Anderson was on hand for the unveiling, and said projects like this are pivotal in keeping the morale of a town positive.

"We used to have an old decrepit bulletin board, where you put something up and it gets blown down. This has lock access, it will really clean things up here," said Anderson. "Communication changes the whole attitude in a community. When people are not in the dark, people are more open to the direction you are heading in. This is something that creates a positive feeling in the community."

The Ride to Conquer Cancer
A Story/Summary from Michael Tumback, Senior Vice President, Corporate Services

The 2011 Ride will go into my books as the easiest course but the toughest weather of the three years I have participated in the event. All week long prior to the Ride, I faithfully monitored the weather was steady....18 degrees, mostly sunny, winds light.....BOY! I know why they deal in probabilities!

Saturday morning dawned in glorious fashion. It was calm, a bit cool but nice....however as I drove to Spruce Meadows at 6 am for the kick off I noticed clouds coming in from the west. As I silently cursed the weather man I realized that compared to hearing the doctor tell you that you had cancer....this really wasn't that bad. Fortunately, the weather stayed good on Saturday....a bit breezy after 11 AM but for the most part it was a cross wind and the temperature was acceptable. At about 8:30 AM, 2,280 riders (having raised $8.6 million for cancer research!) flowed out of Spruce Meadows just south of Calgary and headed south to Chain Lakes Provincial Park. The 112 km of day 1 were relatively straight forward with no major hills and my biggest challenge was changing a flat tire about 8 km from our campsite. Not too serious... but I wound up with lots of grease on my hands from my chain.

The St Joseph Senior girls played Valleyview in the final game with Valleyview winning by 2 points in the last minute. Fought hard and played strong! That's team spirit girls!

Strike Group Employee Takes on the 2009 Ride for Cancer!

In June of 2009, Michael Tumback, Strike Group's Senior VP of Corporate Services took on the challenge of the 192km ride to raise money for Cancer. The Strike Group management and staff were pleased to be a part of this event and thank Michael for his efforts. The following is a personal note from Michael on his experience ...

At approximately 12:30 PM on Sunday I crossed the finish line of the Sierra West Cabins finish line located approximately 15 KM north of Lundbreck on Highway 22. It was the conclusion of an 89 km ride up some very long and big hills into a significant wind. Although the folks from Pincher Creek will tell you that it was just a gentle breeze...when you are climbing a 4 km hill into that was tough. When you still have to pedal DOWN the was howling pretty good.

But I make it sound worse than it was. Although the second day was more difficult by a significant margin, Day 1 could not have been more perfect. From the opening ceremonies with some touching stories, including the grand march of a riderless bike commemorating all those that lost the battle, to the fantastic support from the Calgary City Police who gave us full right of way down 22x to the junction of Hwy 22 when we turned south to Longview, to the volunteers who kept the food and water coming at the rest stops and also set up the camp, to the entertainment in the was a perfect day. The wind was light and the group was just fed off the energy.

1742 riders who had raised $6.9 million departed the Deerfoot Inn Casino at approximately 8 am on Sat on the Road to Conquer Cancer. I managed to finish the first 103 km on day 1 in 3 hrs 44 mins and the 89 kms on day 2 in 4 hrs 15 min but that pales in comparison to some of the effort and dedication I saw in some of the riders. One in particular stands out.... the last rider on day 1 arrived at camp after 10 hrs on the course. She was escorted by two staff members and she crossed the line in tears. I don't know if they were tears of joy or pain but her effort was amazing. Clearly she was not an experienced rider but SHE PUT HERSELF OUT THERE and I shall never forget her face when she finished. Memories like that are truly priceless.

So as I close this down for this year, I would once again like to thank you for your support and the good wishes you sent. It definitely helped me deal with the strong winds and stay motivated toward the end. I pray that none of us ever have to deal with this terrible disease but should that not come to pass, I hope the efforts we have collectively made on this Ride will bear positive fruit in some meaningful way.

All the best to all of you! Take care! Mike

The prizes were donated by contractors and suppliers, as well as cash donations to fund the end of the year BBQ for the teams. When all was said and done, approximately $8,800 dollars were raised and split between four local charities ($2900 each). Please refer to the articles, quotes and photos below for more information.
