Pipeline Coupon Retrieval

Project Locations:

  • North of Wabasca, AB

Strike Divisions:

  • Field Services

Project Overview:

Removal of an NPS 36 hot-tap coupon that migrated downstream during a previous project to a remote valve site North of Wabasca, Alberta. The pipeline remained in-service throughout the operation. A dual hot tap was performed to divert gas through a temporary bypass system, allowing for safe access to the affected section. The line was then cut open, inspected, and the lodged coupon was successfully removed. Following removal, the pipeline was tied back in and returned to normal operations.

Scope

  • Constructed 12.5 km of winter access through muskeg with multiple water crossings
  • Excavated and exposed (2) x 20m sections of buried NPS 36 natural gas pipeline for hot-tap placements
  • Fitment and Installation of (2) x  NPS 36 x 30 split tees on an in-service pipeline
  • Installed 70m of pre-fabricated NPS 30 temporary bypass piping to maintain continuous operations during construction
  • Provided support for (2) x  NPS 36 hot-taps and safely rerouted gas through the bypass system
  • Performed cold cutting of the pipeline and completed removal of the coupon
  • Executed multiple NPS 36 tie-in welds and modified pipe supports to mitigate future settlement issues
  • Reinstated the NPS 36 line and removed temporary bypass piping
  • Completed backfill, full site cleanup and environmental remediation of workspace and winter access
